· Definition of Social Defense
· Social Defence is the treatment and welfare of persons in conflict with the law. In its broadest sense, it covers the whole range of preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative services for the control of crime and delinquency in society in general.
· Social Defence aims to protect society from various types of deviations which result in widespread social disorder seriously disrupting the effective functioning of society. In the absence of any well thought out policy and planned programme of social defence, the basic objective of any society is to ensure a happy and peaceful life for all its members. Thus social defence is a deliberate and organised effort made by a society to defend itself against the disruptive forces which threaten its law and order and thereby impede its socio-economic development.
· Social defence includes measures relating to prevention and control of juvenile delinquency and crime, welfare services in prisons, post-care services for discharged prisoners, probation services, control of immoral traffic, prevention of beggars and rehabilitation of beggars, prevention and control of drug abuse and alcoholism and treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts and alcoholics.
