Understanding the Roles: Group Leader vs Group Facilitator
Each group member is a potential leader and is supportive of the other members. The primary responsibilities of the group worker as a group leader are:
· Being the first point of contact for the team. As a leader, the worker is the ‘central person’ in the group, often the person who holds the group together and to whom more communication is directed than to anyone else.
· The group leader is the influential person in the group who oversees the entire activities of the group. The relationship between the worker and the group members is a major source of a worker’s influence.
· Supporting and facilitating the team in their learning and in team meetings.
· Assigning tasks to other team members where appropriate.
· Supporting other volunteers in their individual roles and in their personal development, as appropriate.
